Character Biography

Many of the common street thugs of Paris don't even believe that NOIR exists. The stories make him out to be more of a ghost or fairy tale. But that could be because the gangsters who are big enough to know the truth don't dare speak of Noir. He is the unseen, unnamed mastermind of the French underworld.

Few have ever met him in person and known who they were speaking to. None have ever seen his face and lived. No one ever sets a meeting with Noir...he finds you, and usually while you are asleep. The French crime bosses know that if ever they wake at night to the smell of jasmine incense, Noir is in the room with them. After they have told him everything he needs to know, there will always be a pill wrapped in a leather cloth next to their bed. The pill is a fast-acting sedative which puts them back to sleep before Noir exits their home.

They say his voice is metallic, as if from beyond the grave. They say that his eyes glow in the dark when he's angry, though his face is always in shadow. And when someone tries to steal from him, or turns on his fellow criminal, that person winds-up dead with a black rose in their mouth.

They also say that Noir is undying. He has been the shadowy lord of crime for over 100 years, as memory serves, and in that time, NO ONE has been able to catch him. If ever a man came close, it would have been Inspector Lumiere of the French Police. Legendary has been the game of cat and mouse that they have played with one another, Noir ever staying one step ahead of the Dogged Inspector.

But all that changed when the Germans invaded.

Suddenly, France was no longer in the hands of the French, and almost overnight, the criminal underworld vanished beneath the occupation.

Noir vanished as well.

It would seem as though Noir would be a likely enemy of the Midnight Men, which is why the group was shocked when Dax Northender put his name on the list. How could such a criminal possibly sit at a table with such esteemed company?

The answer was simple. Aside from the fact that the crime lord's web of contacts and illegal persons was widespread throughout Europe, Dax had come into conflict with Noir during the Case of the Parisian Lotus. Both men had wanted the painting...Dax, because it contained a clue to the location of Atlantis, and Noir, because of its limitless value. In the end, neither man was able to claim it because of the cathedral fire, but for the few minutes that they fought face to face, (or face to mask, as Noir kept his face hidden,) Dax found his match in physical combat. Then, Noir was gone.

The man was a shadow, capable of gaining access to anywhere undetected. He could be in the same room with you and never be seen. He could kill without warning or trace. He was the mastermind behind some of the most brilliant crimes in history, and that was just the kind of man that Dax knew should be working WITH the Midnight Men, especially if they were going to take down Count St. Cross.

The problem was finding him.

Of everyone who had ever come into contact with Noir, only one had ever danced with him. That woman...was the Amazing Domino. He had helped her once when she came to Paris on a mission of profound importance to the Allies. The man she needed to extract information from was a gang boss and a murderer...the kind of man who interrogating makes it difficult for you to return to a place. She knew that if she was ever to be allowed back into Paris without a goon squad waiting for her, she'd need to get someone's permission to go after him. The only man who could give her that, was Noir. Dax knew that if anyone could lure him out of the shadows, it would be the one woman who had ever enchanted him onto the dance floor.
