Character Biography

The Great Depression hit Manhattan hard, and crime had reached an all-time high. The rich lived high above the streets, rarely venturing down to walk among the masses. The Poor were at the mercy of the crime syndicates if they wanted to earn enough money to support their families. The police were outnumbered. Half of them were even on the take, and yet the media portrayed it as the cultural center of the universe...a place where radio stars and business moguls walked with the common folk under a sea of skyscrapers.

Things were almost at their worst when "HE" came. Dressed in a long black trenchcoat and wide-brimmed hat, the criminals of New York would learn to fear the shadow that appeared in the darkest of alleys. They would learn to fear his Mask...they would learn to fear his Guns! His signature weapons were a pair of chrome-plated .45 caliber pistols. The brass shell casings that kids would find on the ground the following morning, always had a cross engraved in them.

Thusly, the masked avenger became known as "The Gotham Saint," and the newspapers went wild. Who was he? Where did he come from? It was speculated that the Saint, due to his apparel, and custom ammunition, must be someone from Manhattan's high society...someone who drank martinis among the rooftops, then descended to the streets to battle the underworld. Every paper had its list of probable identities for the Saint, always a who's-who of New York's upper crust, and usually confirmed bachelors to quicken the pulse of the female readership. Dax Northender was regularly at the top of the list, though he always dismissed the claims, sighting that he didn't spend enough time in the country to be capable for the Saint's schedule.

Heads of Crime families became fearful. No one seemed capable of stopping this masked threat, and every time they brought in a specialist from the outside, he would wind up dead or in jail.

Then the story broke on the front page of the Times. Photojournalist Ricky Carver had snapped 3 pictures of the Gotham Saint battling notorious mob-heavy, Bobbie D-Block. Bobbie had managed during their melee to tear-off the Saint's trench-coat revealing that the Gotham Saint...was actually a woman!

Since then, the papers have had a field day with the name guessing, but so far, no one has been outted. The Mob, emasculated by the news that their Count St. Cross was just a woman, immediately emboldened their operations. Regardless, throughout all the ebb and flow, the Gotham Saint has never let up in her efforts to fight back against the Manhattan gang-lords. Though now that her gender is a matter of public record, she sometimes goes without the trenchcoat, relying on a more fashionable leather body-suit to allow for freedom of movement.

Whoever she may be, the Gotham Saint is a specimen of physical prowess. She is strong, athletic, acrobatic, and capable of incredible climbing and grappling. She is a master of hand-to-hand combat and a marksman the likes of which no criminal can touch.

When asked to join the Midnight Men, Dax Northender promised that she would in no way ever be obligated to reveal her identity to the team. The rest of the group suspect that Dax already knows who she is, since the tabloids suggested the two once had an affair, (before he met Sam.) In any case, she rarely speaks to anyone aside from Dax, and when she does, she keeps her answers short. For some reason, she and Ace seem never to even acknowledge one another's presence. She is, however, the best shot on the team, and the mystery of her identity, as well as the mask itself tend to cause fear in the enemies she faces, even overseas. Afterall, everyone in the world has heard of the Gotham Saint.
